Faction icons XLIV

It's been a while since I last posted any faction icons. However, during the factioneering back in September, there was actually quite a flurry of interest among the Vaqueras. Vachon's motorcycle and guitar are particularly cherished; and they wanted to create factions for them. Nor did I have much difficulty coming up with designs for the icons.

Nevertheless, there has been quite a delay, for—as the Vaqueras themselves would be the first to admit—they are a slackerly lot. Oh, the name "Triumphants", which I suggested might be suitable for the motorcycle faction, proved immediately acceptable. (Vachon's motorcycle is a Triumph.) A name for the guitar faction was another matter.

One obvious possible name was "Gibson Girls" (for Vachon's guitar is a Gibson). However, this has a fatal flaw: it is really only appropriate for female faction members. Admittedly, there do seem to be only women in the group at the moment. However, it was generally agreed that that is no excuse for excluding potential male members. Then [livejournal.com profile] waltd came up with quite a little list of possible alternatives. Among them, "G-Strings" (referring, of course, to guitar strings) immediately struck the eye. However, it elicited a strongly polarized response, with a few people loving the pun, while others found the name quite offensive.

So all had to wait while the membership was polled at their leisure—and, as I said, the Vaqueras are a slackerly lot! They have eventually decided, though, on the non-sexist "Gibsons".

So here are the icons:

Triumphants:

Obviously, the dominant image in this icon has to be the motorcycle itself. However, images of it among the screen captures are both few and incomplete. I therefore googled Triumph motorcycles, and did my best to match what I found with the little that can be seen of Vachon's bike.

For the background, I selected a suitable street scene. That it originally had the Caddy in it is now irrelevant: the motorcycle completely covers it over. Given that it is a visually "busy" background, I decided, in the interest of clarity, to use a simple sans-serif font for the logo. Red tones were picked up from the bike, making the letters quite visible.

Gibsons:

For the Gibsons' icon, I initially looked for screen captures of Vachon holding the guitar. However, these tend to crop out most of the instrument. In the end, therefore, I resorted once again to Google, matching guitar images with what could be seen of it in NAT's screen caps.

For the name of the faction, I decided to use a "sixties" style font, colouring the letters to match the palette of the background. This is taken from a screen capture of the interior of Vachon's church. It has mauve highlights, as well as brown/orange tones from the sconces of candles.

As the Vaqueras were clear that they were quite happy to have Vachon in the icon, I used a screen capture of him tuning the guitar, though only a little of the latter is actually visible.
