FK Ficathon eve 2025...

Whew! The schedule is made and locked. [community profile] fkficfest '25 starts releasing tomorrow (Monday, May 26).

Gold stars to the community for collectively loading every story successfully with no help from me! If that has ever happened before, it's not leaping to mind, and this is our sixteenth annual game. I'm impressed!

To build our schedule, of course, I got my annual modly sneak peak into our stories, and while there are many trends and uniquenesses of all kinds -- which I will not spoil -- one meta curiosity really nabbed my attention. Of the 10 authors, only 4, including me, chose to hold the reveal of their chosen prompt for the story's endnotes. The other 6 chose to state the prompt up front in the story's preface. Intriguing! Different strokes for different folks.

FK Fic Fest 2025

[community profile] fkficfest | FKFicFest A03 Collection

We're on the verge of stories! 12 new Forever Knight fanfiction tales by 10 authors are coming our way!

Lengths range from ~900 to ~11K words. We'll see procedurals, humor, songfic, episode aftermaths, and more. Tagged characters include Nick, Natalie, Lacroix, Schanke, and Janette; Stonetree, Cohen, and Reese; Tracy, Grace, and Feliks.

Stories begin releasing tomorrow, Monday, 5/26. We'll have one per day until the final "Index List" ("Closing Ceremonies") post on Saturday, 6/07. I plan to release each morning before work (Pacific Time).

Please read as many as appeal. And please be generous with your comments, kudos, and recommendations! The future of FK fanfic depends on kind interactions with authors.

Tip: When your story releases, I recommend updating its posting date from when you loaded it to when I released it. This lifts your story on the AO3 "recent" lists to reach more readers.

Thank you so much! Yay, FK! Yay, us!

Museums and music

Trains on a Sunday run to slightly different timetables, so if it was yesterday, I would have made it for the earlier train, but its nearest equivalent is actually later, so my wait is going to be nearly as long.

This morning, I did some aimless walking in the Hull old town. When the museums opened at 11, I went to the Museum of Archaeology. I liked the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Age displays, and admired the many Roman mosaics. I also visited the Wilberforce House Museum, which gave a brief history of the house itself, William Wilberforce, and a more in-depth exhibition about slavery, the abolition campaigns and abolition.

I went to three concerts today. The first one had medieval music on a theme of "where are the women". It was held in the Quire in the Minster. Then a joyous concert with York Waits in another church, and finally a concert with a baroque ensemble, Ensemble Augelletti. This last concert was recorded to be broadcast in the Early Music Show on BBC Three in June, so we had dire warnings about silencing phones and not coughing when they were playing. The concert itself was delightful.

The festival organisers were very keen to have people fill in evaluation forms, but having filled one in, I'm not all that convinced they'll get that much useful data out of it. I suppose it depends what their funders are asking them to show. Apparently their three-yearly cycle with the local authority is up for renewal so they were clearly attempting to quantify the benefit to the local area.

What has stood out over the past couple of days is being, at my age, in what has looked like the youngest tenth of the audience. I could understand it if I was, say, fifteen years younger, but not at my age. That kind age distribution doesn't really seem sustainable over longer term, although I suppose it's also a reflection of the age distribution in the local area and people with the means to do a day or weekend away for the festival.

More music and some shopping

Few days ago, the forecast for today was light rain all day, but luckily that didn't bear out in the end. It rained over night, but the rain had pretty much stopped by the time I was heading out for some parkrun tourism. And some light rain was falling just now when I was walking from Beverley Minster to the station for another night of waiting almost the maximum time between these two trains.

I went to today's afternoon concert, with 17th century Italian music for lute and voice. It was very enjoyable.

Afterwards, I faced a longish gap between concerts, so I ended up doing some very thorough browsing in the shops just to pass the time, and emerged with three books from the Oxfam bookshop, a pair of trousers, and some socks. At least the weather held and it didn't rain.

The evening concert was at the Minster, which is certainly an impressive building. The programme was mostly Palestrina, performed by Stile Antico, and they sounded wonderful.

FKFicFest is Nigh!

Wheeeeeeew! Just gave my [community profile] fkficfest story a final read through. Going to stop picking at it now.

I thought I might finish two stories this year. And while I wrote a second story, I’m not satisfied with it. As I explained to my Discord writing buddies, the "vibes" are not there. It’s missing something and I’m not sure what. No big deal. I will continue to noodle and work on it until it’s ready. (In 2023, I finished zero stories in time for the fest, but kept working, posting one a couple months later. And I’m still working on another one inspired by a 2023 prompt lol).

We had a great pool of prompts for this year's fest. I had an idea for a third story, but knew no way was that was going to happen. So I added it to "the pile" to work on in the future :-D

I am sooooooo looking forward to reading everyone’s new stories!!

TLOZ:TwPr story concept: "The Bulbin Truce"

Probably this has been done, of course, but I just now thought of this The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess post-canon story possibility, and maybe it would be worth writing someday:

Up to a certain point near the story's climax, the audience and the characters all believe that the bulbins are monsters/demons, and nothing else. But in that particular scene, we see the Bulbin King speak -- literally speak, and in Hyrulean! -- for himself and make a different choice, and reveal his motivations, showing that at least he, and probably all his people, are, well, people. Not monsters, like all the monsters that cannot speak and cannot choose. At the very end of the game, we see the Bulbin King and a couple of other bulbins riding around, possibly hunting, possibly raiding, iirc, but definitely targeting animals, no longer people.

What is the journey from being perceived as monsters/demons to being perceived as just another of the diverse peoples of Hyrule? Is this a joint project of the TP characters and the Bulbin King? Zelda cannot successfully just order her people to stop hating and fearing bulbins; the Bulbin King may have the same problem with his people. Do the bulbins in the end settle in greater Hyrule and join society and maybe even produce sages someday, or do they turn out in the end to be from somewhere beyond Ordon, and return there? (Were they one of the surface peoples in the time of SkSw and became more monster-like over time? Were they monsters/demons who became people, a la what's-his-name in SkSw?)

Just thinking.

LaCroix is a Mean Girl

[personal profile] thefruitbat very kindly beta read for me recently, and told me LaCroix was a "mean girl" in my fic, calling him Regina Georgecroix.

I laughed sooooo hard at that!! And now, I CAN'T UNSEE IT! 😆😆😆

Thus, this was born:

Nick and LaCroix with the words "Stop trying to make mortality happen. It's not going to happen."

p.s. If you're not familiar, Mean Girls is a movie about a toxic high school clique. One of the girls in the clique desperately wanted to coin "fetch" as a new slang term and kept using it, hoping it would catch on. Regina George, the clique's absolute queen bee, finally told her, "Stop trying to make fetch happen. It's not going to happen."

In East Riding for the weekend

I was travelling from London to Hull on Hull Trains today, which meant a degree of uncertainty about if my train would actually run. Hull Trains train drivers have been striking on some dates from March, and today was one of them. My understanding is they've managed to run at least half of their trains using managers who are also qualified as train drivers. And so today my train ran, but not the one due to depart from Kings Cross two hours earlier. It seemed they had solved the problem of potentially carrying two trains' worth of passengers on one by running the train as a double unit, so instead of five carriages there were ten. So my journey went smoothly.

In the evening, made my way to Beverley for my concert of the Beverley and East Riding Early Music Festival, with Florilegium. They had a programme with two Bach works and two Handel works. It was wonderful.

I had checked my return trains to Hull in advance and knew there was a high chance of missing the earlier post-concert option, and I did miss it by a couple of minutes in the end. So still waiting for the next one.

Countdown: FKFicFest '25 stories come due tomorrow

Yep, tomorrow, Saturday, May 24 is the FKFicFest '25 due date. Reveals start Monday, May 26, and continue at a rate of one or two per day, as long as they last. For all the info, see our gameplay post.

The official deadline is 11:59pm Saturday (Pacific Time). Those who've played before know that I won't "lock" the collection until Sunday noon (Pacific Time). Still, it helps if everyone who plans to load a story does so on Saturday. Then I can confidently spend Sunday checking that the stories loaded as intended and building our release schedule (for example, lining up the stories to vary in length, rating, characters, etc.). You can continue editing on the AO3 until stories release!

When you're ready: Learn how to post | Post to our AO3 collection

(If you don't do AO3 for any reason, reach out about posting here on DW before the deadline. Last chance.)

Yay, new FK stories! Yay, FK fans! :-D Kudos to the authors who've already loaded stories!

Up past my bedtime

Today, I finished work at lunchtime and then headed out to London, where I'm staying overnight before I head out north for the weekend. In between, I went to see Hurts at O2 Academy Brixton, for their 15-year anniversary concert for the album Happiness. I booked my ticket when the pre-sale opened, but even so, when the day arrived today, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it. I feel so out of practice with going to gigs. I got there just before seven and the doors were already open. I found a spot close to the front, not a great view with taller people in front, but good enough. The opener was OK, but sounded a bit unbalanced. Hurts were really good and it was exciting to be a part of a crowd happy to hear them again. The first half was Happiness songs, and after a quick break for Theo, a selection from the later albums.

Feet feel tired now.

Wednesday reading

Finished since the last reading post
Finished Skott and found it wonderful. It was written in a rather pared-down simple style, which helped as I wasn't feeling very confident about reading in Swedish when I started it. But it was easier than I thought even if I did stop and look up some words here and there. It was fewer words than I was perhaps expecting, but looking up skott in the title certainly helped me to appreciate the ambiguity and how it fits with the book. Anyway, it's a continuation war novel with the young Tallgren being sent to the front. He expects to die, but he falls in love, but that's not a happy ending in a novel in wartime.

Currently reading
Still reading Heaven on Earth. Also started reading Family History by Vita Sackville-West, but I'm probably going to leave it at home when I go away for the weekend.

Reading next
Not entirely sure but I'll pick up something unread from my shelves.
