It's surprising, really, how different the length of time can be. There are a few that take only an hour or so. Admittedly, they tend to be the simpler designs; but there are others—seemingly simple!—that drive me nuts because some element just isn't working.

Sometimes the answer is to swap out the screen capture, or use a different font, or something like that. Sometimes, though, the solution is to start over from scratch. And that, of course, means dreaming up a completely different design. You know the trouble I had with the Ravenettes' icon! I worked for ages on each of the first two versions and just couldn't get things to go right. The third one actually took far less time; but, of course, cumulatively, getting an acceptable final design got spread out over far too many hours and weeks.

But then there are the ones where I have a clear vision, and it's just a question of fitting the pieces together: getting the best size for each element, the right shade of background: small tweaks. The See-Through Knighties' icon was very quick; and I just did one for the B.R.I.C.K. that was almost as fast.

It all depends.
