4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
There are assumptions to the way this is worded! Not all fanworks are fic, you know; and I'm not going to take the time to delve beyond AO3's stats. My top five fanworks by kudos are "Red over Green" (Vorkosiverse), "The Rape of the Book" (Venetia), "Dear Sister-the-Sister" (M*A*S*H), "Uncle Peter" (Beatrix Potter art), "Exit Stage Left, A Wounded Warrior: The Lost Chapters of The Charioteer"
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes. Always, unless I miss a notification for a very late comment. I think it's the polite thing to do, even for brief comments; and, for longer ones, I usually want to expand on something they've said or answer any questions.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Probably "Couched Work", not so much because of the actual ending but because it's just about the angstiest thing I've ever written.
7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
I'd say "Exit Stage Left, A Wounded Warrior: The Lost Chapters of The Charioteer". It's a fair attempt at pastiche as far as Renault's style is concerned, but ends a lot more happily than anything she would ever write. My fic is very much a Christmas story, especially at the end.
8. Do you write crossovers? If so what's the craziest one you’ve written?
My crossovers tend to be done straight. If we include the fusions, though, then it's definitely a tie between "Hobbiton Farm" (Historical Farm characters in modern LotR setting) and "Season 7, Episode 4: Day Two" (Time Team characters in Dalemark setting). It has to be a tie because it's the same basic concept each time: RPF translated to a fantasy world.
9. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No.
10. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I write mostly gen. When I do write relationships, they tend to be either canon domestic fic or non-canon "feels". I think the most explicit thing I've written is "Don't Insult My Intelligence" (a Charioteer fic), and that all takes place inside the character's head.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, once: "A Winchester Always" (a M*A*S*H story). Technically, in fannish terms, it was a remix; but, as far as I'm concerned, it was co-written; and it is credited as such on my website. My sister wrote the original; and I reorganized it heavily and doubled its length.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Not into "ships" per se.
15. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I still have hopes!
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue and pastiche, I'd say. At any rate, when I attempt pastiche (which is often the case for one-off rarelit treats), people tend to comment that I've caught the author's style; and, for TV shows, I'm often told that they can "hear" the actor's voice. It's the same skill, of course: a matter of imitation.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Plotting. I'm not saying I can't, but it's like pulling teeth sometimes.
18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I've done it. When I wrote my virtual season, there was one episode where there were several scenes set in Quebec; and I felt all the French should actually be in French (i.e. with subtitles, if it were actually filmed). Usually, though, I just add the odd word if it seems appropriate to the character. In FK fic, for instance, Janette canonically often says a word or two of French (e.g., calling Nick "chéri").
19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Star Trek. It's in a box somewhere. Cut'n'paste typescript from the late 80s, years before I went on line.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
My parents always said they didn't play favourites. Now I'm an author, I totally get the point. My least favourite, of course, is whichever one I'm currently procrastinating over. Until it finally agrees to get written, that is.
