It's up!

Yes, I dropped out; but I did want to fulfil the assignment. It's just that I had not come up with an idea; and, in my state of (I hope temporary) decreptitude, I couldn't be sure that I'd manage to finish a story even if a plot bunny jumped into my lap, wiggled its nose, and winked at me.

However, I got an idea on Monday, wrote the first bit on Wednesday, and pulled an all-nighter to get it done and uploaded today. (In between, I did a lot of sleeping. For example, on Thursday I walked over to the supermarket for the first time in a month, came back with a full shopping basket, fell asleep an hour later, and didn't wake up till midnight. The store is only fifteen minutes away!)

The story is a bit dark in some ways, but I hope not in ways that will disturb my recipient. Certainly, it fits the bill in other ways. Anyway, this is the way it finally decided it wanted to be written, warts and all. (Typos, of course, will be corrected if and when I spot them. I'm sure they're there. They always are.)

As I dropped out of the exchange, I have no idea whether I'll get a gift myself. It all depends on whether my own assigned author remained on course or dropped out hirself. I'll find out when the archive opens, I guess.

The important thing is that I did, in the end, finish.

Update: I shook the presents, and one's for me! How lovely.

I've just defaulted on my [community profile] rarelywritten assignment. It's something I've been debating for the last couple of days; and I hate to do it. I've never defaulted in an exchange before; and its seems like such an admission of failure. On the other hand, after a lot of thought, I decided it's the fairest thing to do. I just feel so damned tired.

Perhaps next week inspiration will come, energy will return, and I'll write a treat. (I hope so.)

This way, though, I can at least be sure that my recipient will get her just and proper present, even if it has to come a trusty pinch-hitter.

First off, thank you for writing me a story about one of these women. While not all are equally "rare" in their respective fandoms, that's only because the fandoms are rare in their own right.

Suggestions, speculations.... I've put quite a few of these under the cut, since I know a lot of people find them useful. In truth, there are many things that intrigue me about these characters; so I'm just throwing out suggestions in case you don't have an idea in mind already and are looking for something to inspire you. I wouldn't even call them "optional details"—though you'll gather that they're all more or less gen.

I know you'll write something I love!

I haven't filled all my slots yet; but I have started nominating fandoms and characters for the newly renamed [community profile] rarelywritten.

So far, this is what I've got:

The Charioteer - Mary Renault
- Lucy Odell Straike
- Mrs Timmings (The Charioteer)
- Nurse Adrian
- Matron (The Charioteer)
- ???

Forever Knight
- Amanda Cohen
- Natalie Lambert
- Norma Alves
- Myra Schanke
- Jenny Schanke

Hellspark - Janet Kagan
- Tocohl Susumo
- Maggy | Lord Lynn Margaret
- Alfvaen Tinling
- Buntecreih
- Nevelen Darragh

Jean Robertson Series - Janet Sandison
- Doris | Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lindsay
- Jean Robertson
- Isabel Adair
- Jessie Simpson
- ???

I've left an open character slot in two of these so that, if there's someone you want, you can let me know. If no one does, I'll fill someone in before the deadline. (Well, that's the intention, anyway.)

Also, I've only nominated four fandoms so far. I'm still pondering the final one.
